How to Create a Succulent Bowl

Happy weekend friends!

Even though it’s not officially summer yet, it sure feels like it here! We had crazy hot (for us) temperatures this week and it felt like mid July, not early June. We have been spending tons of time out on our back patio, and today I want to show you this cute and inexpensive succulent bowl I made as a centerpiece for our outdoor dining area.

Pretty right? A while back I saw these new decorative bowls at IKEA and I picked one up, not really sure what I was going to do with it.

I have always been a fan of succulents and I had seen a few decorative succulent terrariums around town at some of my favourite stores, which is where I got the idea to make one for myself. Today I am going to share the how-to’s of this planter with you!

This was a really easy project -it took very little time and didn’t break the bank, my favourite kind of project! Here’s what you need to make one for yourself:

a wide planter or bowl – I used this one from IKEA
pebbles, I got mine from the dollar store
cacti friendly soil – the person in the garden section of Home Depot recommended this one
succulents – look for a variety of shapes and colors to make your planter look interesting
small decorative rocks, I actually used aquarium gravel that I grabbed on one of my many Walmart runs

Like I said, this is a seriously easy thing to make.

put some pebbles on the bottom of the bowl for drainage – succulents don’t like to sit in water
fill the bowl up about 3/4 with soil
take your succulents out of the pots and arrange them fairly close together in the bowl.
When you are happy with the placement of your plants, fill in any gaps with more soil
Sprinkle the aquarium gravel on top and voila

I love the little pop of green on the table, and it doesn’t get any more low-maintenence than this! I think succulents are so beautiful and I was impressed with the selection at my local home depot. IKEA had some good ones too.
