“Discover The Fall Five: 5 simple home décor items to welcome autumn and make your home feel cozy, warm, and inviting on any budget”

Fall is such a busy time of year for families. The kids are settling back into school and activities

and the easy breezy days of summer have turned into a daily grind! Weekdays are scheduled from the minute you wake up until your head hits the pillow at night, and weekends are no less hectic with chores, errands and, if you are a parent, probably some kind of sideline cheerleading at a sports event of some sort! (I see you soccer, hockey, baseball, basketball & volleyball parents!).

Here in Canada, we have barely re-calibrated our systems to full throttle mode, and boom - we have Thanksgiving fast approaching and Halloween hot on  it’s heels! Then you have the outside world telling you it’s Fall Y’all and that you should be feeling #grateful while also signaling pressure to have your home decorated to perfection! Well to quote the teens in my life “I ain’t about that life”. The goal of today’s post is not to add to the external pressure to have a perfectly styled home, but to offer you some simple decorating inspiration IF you feel so inclined to decorate your home for Fall. The coming months mean more gatherings at home and more time spent inside, so it’s worthwhile to add a few simple touches that make your space feel extra cozy and welcoming. While summer is my favorite weather season, Fall is my favorite decorating season. I love the warmth, color and coziness that this season brings.

As I was taking inventory of my own Fall decorating bins last week, I noticed that the items I was using fell into 5 categories - which is what inspired today's post! Plus "the Fall five" just has a great ring to it, don't you think?

All of the items I am sharing are easy to find. As a matter of fact, most of them you can find at the grocery store/department store while you are stocking up on fishy crackers or buying your Thanksgiving dinner ingredients. For example, while grocery shopping at Superstore last week, I added a few new Fall home décor items to my collection - faux pumpkins (cause you can never have too many!) a beautiful acacia wood footed bowl and a colorful wreath for our front door.

I spent a few days decorating my home for Fall last week, sticking to the “Fall Five” home décor categoriess and I am happy with my efforts. As usual, I had my little furry sidekick Lucy on hand to help me out!

I created some simple little vignettes around our home and they make me happy and bring me joy. So without further ado, let’s take a look at  “the Fall Five” home décor categories and see how I have used these in my own home!

The Fall Five

  1. Wreath
ree

This is one of the simplest things you can do to welcome Fall into your home, starting at your front door. A Fall wreath adds instant style to your entryway.

ree

Wreaths are commonly found at home decor and department stores, they affordable to buy and super easy to display! Here is a snapshot of the options at my local Superstore, I had a hard time picking just one!

You can hang them with a wreath hanger or an adheisive hook, and it really doesn't get any easier than that!

  1. Touches of Nature
(Stems, Pumpkins, Acorns & Pine Cones)

One of the best ways to style your home for the seasons is to take your cues from mother nature. There is plenty of inspiration happening outside during the Fall, from the changing leaves to harvest of items like pumpkins and apples. I always like to include elements from nature in my styling, but especially during Autumn. As you will see, I like using faux stems, pumpkins, acorns and pine cones..

Stems

I like to swap out the green stems in my vases for fall inspired foliage. While my general esthetic is quite neutral, I love these bursts of warm autumn colors in our home during the Fall.

Pumpkins

Pumpkins are one of my favourite Fall décor items and I like to distribute them all around our home. I have quite a collection which I seem to add to every year. As already mentioned, I bought these faux pumpkins from Superstore last week:

Last year I bought this gorgeous furry pumpkin while on a trip to Victoria. I was happy to see it when I unpacked my Fall décor.

This year it's part of my living room coffee table styling:

I have some pumpkins on our living room built-ins. This felt trio on one side:

I love the new wooden footed bowl I bought from Superstore filled with white mini pumpkins.

Acorns

Acorns are having a moment this year and I have noticed them on the shelves of popular home decor shops. I have had these felt acorns fromTarget for many years , so I am happy that they are “back in style” and on trend! I split my collection and have some on display on my entryway table and another bowl as part of my living room coffee table vignette.

  1. Scented Candles

Scented candles are a really easy way to welcome Fall into your home. Bonus points for candles that smell good AND look like beautiful, sculptural decor pieces - like this candle I treated myself to from Anthropologie. Trend alert, it is acorn shaped!

Candles are a very broad category and also stocked everywhere from the grocery store to home home décor shops. Some of the typical Fall scents are pumpkin spice inspired, but there are also more subtle scents like these ones from Canyon Candle co.

My current favourite scent for Fall is the Ginger and Santal candle by Studio McGee for Target. It smells cozy...is that a weird way to describe a candle?

ree

Whatever your scent profile is, you can find a candle, often in a pretty vessel and have one or two on display and in use to bring on the Autumn vibes!

  1. Scented Soaps

Similarly to scented candles, scented hand and dish soaps are another way to welcome the changing seasons into your home. I am always and forever a fan of Mrs. Meyers soaps and sprays. Not only are they effective but there is a variety of scents, some very seasonal like Fall Leaves (my current fave) and Iowa Pine for Christmas time. I have Fall Leaves in the kitchen and my powder room, and I enjoy how these soaps look and smell.

The Fall Leaves scent is easy to find in the US (I buy mine at Target) but doesn't seem to be available in Canada. This soap from Williams and Sonoma looks good, although the price is kinda steep!

  1. Textiles

Pillows and Throw Blankets are another way to change your home décor for the season. I like to introduce darker and moodier earth tones into my home during the Fall months. I would love to transport this collection of pillows and throws from West Elm directly onto my sofa:

ree

In particular I am drawn to earthy brownish green colours as well as chocolate brown, rusty pinky reds and golden yellow colors. I went with a monochromatic green pillow combo on our front living room sofa and paired it with a golden yellow throw blanket - a last year Studio McGee for Target find.

On a recent shopping trip to Homesense, I fell in love with the pink/brown hues in this plaid throw blanket. Plaid is a very common pattern for Fall and I reminds me of a cozy flannel shirt or pajama pants! I am still working on some pillows to incorporate with the plaid blanket.

ree

Adding some pillows and throws in your favourite Fall colors is a quick and easy way to shift into the new season and breathe some life into your home décor.

Calling these "textiles' might be a bit of a stretch, but I have to give mention to these cute pumpking napkins I got at Superstore. I love the pattern and they look really cute as part of our kitchen island vignette!
