Christmas Living Room

It's that time of year again! Is it just me, or did December kind of sneak up on you too? I have been so busy with client projects lately as well as juggling the kids are their bizarre schedules, that I was slower to decorate this year. I love decorating my home for Christmas and once I got into the swing of things, I had so much fun transforming our home.

I focused most of my energy on our entryway and formal living room and today I wanted to give you a little tour. So pour yourself a coffee or glass of wine and let's dive in!

One of the things that helps me when I am making my Christmas decorating plan is to come up with a color scheme, just like I would with any home decorating project. For the last few years, I have been all about the red, green and black color combo.

Entryway

When you walk into our front door, our entryway, stairs and formal living room are all connected. To set the tone, I always decorate the surface of our Hemnes Shoe cabinet.

Every year I attach a few garlands to our stair railing and then hang some decorative stockings along the spindles. This year I hung all of our stockings and I love the impact it makes!

Each of my kids have a special framed "Baby's 1st Christmas" ornament that I hang with their stockings. I treasure these special ornaments so much! Just look at baby Stella!

Living Room

Welcome to my favorite room in our home, which also doubles as my home office. While I love this room year round, it really comes to life at Christmas time.

The Couch

This throw blanket I bought at Target a few seasons ago was the inspiration for my color scheme and modern Farmhouse Christmas vibe. I love the traditional feel of red and green and using black gives it a bit of a modern twist.

I love switching up my throw pillows for the seasons because it's really easy and fairly inexpensive if you use the same inserts.

The dark grey velvet pillows have been on my sofa since the Fall and I incorporated my "all is calm" pillow that I have had for years with a new red pillow I spotted at Homesense a few weeks ago. The faux fur really enhances the cozy factor.

I made this pillow cover out of a tablecloth a few years ago.

I actually used to make pillow covers and sell them on Etsy, but life got a little too busy and I have really neglected my little shop...just not enough hours in the day!

The Tree

We have had this same pre-lit faux tree for years now and it has been good to us. We discovered the hard way, many Christmases ago, that my daughter is allergic to trees. So now it's faux for us, and I can't say I mind all that much. Real trees smell so good, but only for a few days. Then they are just messy!

Last year we started using a Christmas tree collar as opposed to a tree skirt and I love the tidy look! We decorate this tree with a mixture of simple red and gold ornaments that we have had forever and then our sentimental family photo ornaments that we add each year.

The Mantle

While the Christmas tree is usually the star of the show, the mantle is the supporting act. This year I was craving a more simple Christmas mantle with lots of greenery. I bought a new gorgeous faux garland from my favorite local store (Trims in Edgemont for all of you locals!) and attached it with some twine and command hooks.

To create balance I used my wooden candle holders on one side of the mirror and then my driftwood Christmas trees on the other. The red and white stripped stockings added a fun pop of color and help to tie the mantle in with the color scheme previously mentioned.

Back in the Fall of 2019 we took down our TV above this mantle and I hung the round mirror in it's place. I have had so much fun styling this space over the last year. Here's a fun look at it through the seasons:

Coffee and Side Tables

I like to add some seasonal touches to our accent tables as well, which is the perfect place to create some little vignettes or "styling moments".

I love bottle brush trees and the little white ceramic houses I scored in the dollar section of Target a few years ago. And because our tree is faux, I am all about the Christmas tree scent. Balsam and Firewood from Anthropologie is my favorite and I treat myself to a few new ones each year.
